Maternity and Neonatal National Assurance Assessment

NEWS 17 November 2025

Following Llais’ report on people’s experiences of maternity services in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot earlier in the year, the Cabinet Secretary Jeremy Miles announced that a national assurance assessment of maternity services would take place.

Welsh Government has now commissioned an Independent Oversight Panel to undertake a comprehensive All-Wales Maternity and Neonatal Assurance Assessment.

This assessment will focus on being forward-looking, designed to provide assurance to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services as to whether services are delivering safe, high-quality, and compassionate care, and whether learning from previous reviews in Wales and across the UK has been effectively embedded.

The voices and experiences of women, parents and families, and the maternity and neonatal workforce in Wales will be at the heart of the Maternity and Neonatal National Assurance Assessment

The Independent Oversight Panel appointed to undertake the assessment is hosting a range of listening sessions throughout Wales. Whether positive or more challenging, the panel aims to capture a full range of recent experiences of maternity and neonatal care, representative of all communities.

Llais has a representative on the Maternity Assessment’s Stakeholder panel and on the Family and Community Voices Consultative Group.

If you have an experience of maternity services to share, you can find out more about how to get involved here: Help make sure maternity and neonatal services in Wales are improving - NHS Wales Performance and Improvement
